Soutzoukakia – Traditional Greek Meatballs in Rich Tomato Sauce

Soutzoukakia are one of Greece's most beloved comfort foods. These tender, oblong meatballs are seasoned with cumin, cinnamon, coriander, garlic, and oregano, then slowly simmered in a rich tomato sauce until perfectly tender.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • 700 g ground beef

  • 1 small onion, grated

  • 3 garlic cloves

  • 80 g breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp ground coriander

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

  • salt and black pepper

  • olive oil

For the Tomato Sauce

  • 400 g crushed tomatoes

  • 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 onion

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 200 ml beef or vegetable stock

  • oregano

  • thyme

  • a pinch of cinnamon

  • salt and pepper

  • olive oil

Instructions

  1. Combine all meatball ingredients and mix well.

  2. Shape into oval meatballs.

  3. Brown them lightly in olive oil.

  4. Sauté onion and garlic.

  5. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, herbs, spices, and stock.

  6. Return the meatballs to the pan.

  7. Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes.

  8. Allow the dish to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Serve with:

  • rice

  • mashed potatoes

  • roasted potatoes

  • crusty bread

  • Greek salad

  • tzatziki
